The best day trips from Marrakech are the Agafay desert (45 minutes away), the Ourika Valley and Imlil in the High Atlas (1 to 1.5 hours), the Ouzoud waterfalls (2.5 to 3 hours), the coastal town of Essaouira (2.5 to 3 hours) and the kasbah of Aït Benhaddou (3.5 to 4 hours). The first three work as easy half or full days. The last three are long days with five to eight hours on the road, so pick one of them, not all three.

This guide compares nine day trips from Marrakech by distance, time and cost, and explains how to do each one by group tour, public transport, taxi or rental car. Prices and travel times were checked in October 2026. If you are still planning the city itself, start with our things to do in Marrakech guide, and see the Morocco itinerary for how these trips fit into a longer route.

How to choose the right day trip

Three questions settle it for most people.

How long do you want to sit in a vehicle? Agafay, Ourika, Imlil, Anima and the lake are all within about 90 minutes of the city. Ouzoud, Essaouira and Aït Benhaddou mean five to eight hours of driving in total, and most tours leave around 7:30 or 8:00 and return after 18:00.

What is the weather doing? In July and August, Marrakech often passes 38°C. The mountain valleys and the coast are much cooler, so Ourika, Imlil, Oukaïmeden and Essaouira are the comfortable choices. In winter, the Atlas can be cold and snowy, and Agafay evenings need a warm jacket. Our best time to visit Morocco guide has month-by-month detail.

How many days do you have? With three days in Marrakech, one day trip is enough. With four or five, add a second, and make it a different landscape: one mountain trip and one desert or coast trip works better than two long drives back to back.

1. Agafay desert

A line of camel riders crossing the stony Agafay desert near Marrakech Photo: aiden on Unsplash

Agafay is the closest desert landscape to Marrakech, a pale, rolling plateau of stone and dust 30 to 40 km southwest of the city, with the High Atlas along the horizon. It takes about 45 minutes to reach. It is not a sand desert: there are no big dunes here. What you get is wide, empty scenery, a camel ride or quad bike session, and dinner at a camp while the sun goes down.

Most visitors go in the late afternoon for sunset and dinner, which also avoids the midday heat. This Agafay quad, camel ride and dinner package covers the standard evening, with pickup from your riad or hotel. The camps are scattered along dirt tracks with no public transport, so going without a tour means hiring a grand taxi and agreeing a return time. Guides we checked quote roughly 250 to 350 MAD for the car.

  • Time: 4 to 6 hours including transfers.
  • Tip: if you want real dunes, you need Merzouga or Zagora, which are multi-day trips. A 3-day desert tour from Marrakech is the usual way to do it.
  • Check your insurance before booking quad bikes. Many standard policies leave them out, as our travel insurance for Morocco guide explains.

2. Ourika Valley and the Setti Fatma waterfalls

The Ourika Valley is the easiest mountain escape from Marrakech. The valley begins about 30 km south of the city and the road follows the river up to the village of Setti Fatma, where it ends, around 1 to 1.5 hours from the medina depending on traffic. Along the way are argan and saffron cooperatives, clay-coloured villages, and cafés that set their tables right in the shallow river.

From Setti Fatma, a rocky path climbs to a series of seven waterfalls. Most people go only as far as the first or second, which takes 30 minutes to an hour of steady uphill walking and some scrambling. The higher falls involve exposed ledges and are for confident hikers only. Local guides wait at the trailhead and are useful on the awkward sections. Agree the price before you set off.

By tour: this Ourika Valley and seven waterfalls day trip includes transport and a local guide for the hike. Budget group tours start at roughly €15 to €25 per person, usually without lunch.

On your own: shared grand taxis leave from the Bab er-Rob area on the south side of the medina once they are full. Expect about 30 to 50 MAD per seat. A whole taxi for the day costs roughly 300 to 800 MAD depending on the season and how well you bargain.

  • Time: half a day for the valley only, a full day with the waterfall hike and lunch.
  • Tip: Monday is market day at Tnine Ourika, at the foot of the valley. It is a working rural souk, not a tourist one.
  • Avoid: summer weekends and public holidays, when half of Marrakech drives up for lunch by the river.

3. Imlil and the Toubkal foothills

Imlil is a mountain village at about 1,740 m, around 65 km south of Marrakech and 75 to 90 minutes by road. It is the starting point for climbing Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa, but you do not need to climb anything to enjoy a day here. The air is cool, the valleys are full of walnut and apple trees, and paths link a string of Amazigh villages.

Good day walks from Imlil:

  • Aroumd (Armed): a village on a rock spur about 40 minutes' walk up the valley. An easy return trip with wide views.
  • The Imlil valley loop: a few hours through orchards and villages such as Tamatert, usually with tea or lunch in a family home.
  • Sidi Chamharouch: a shrine and cluster of stalls at 2,310 m on the Toubkal trail, roughly two hours beyond Aroumd. Allow five to six hours of walking for the return trip. Non-Muslims cannot enter the shrine itself.

A licensed local guide is required beyond the checkpoint near Aroumd on the Toubkal trail, and officers record passport details there, so carry your passport if you plan to walk towards Sidi Chamharouch. Guides can be arranged through your accommodation or the guides' office in Imlil. Rules have been enforced with varying strictness over the years, so confirm the current position before you go.

On your own: shared grand taxis leave from the Bab er-Rob area. Some go straight to Imlil. Others stop at the market town of Asni, 17 km below, where you change to a second taxi. Recent guides put the full trip at about 50 to 70 MAD per seat. A private taxi costs roughly 300 to 500 MAD each way.

  • Time: a full day.
  • Tip: bring a warm layer in every season. Imlil is more than 1,200 m higher than Marrakech.
  • Summit plans: Toubkal is a two-day trek for most people, not a day trip.

4. Anima Garden

Anima is a large botanical and sculpture garden created by the Austrian artist André Heller, about 27 km from Marrakech on the road to Ourika. Shaded paths run between palms, cacti, roses and water features, with art installations at every turn and the Atlas behind. It is a calm half day and works well with children.

The official site lists adult entry at 140 MAD, with reduced prices for ages 12 to 16 and free entry for younger children, and opening hours of 9:00 to 18:00 all year except during religious holidays. A free shuttle runs from a car park near the Koutoubia mosque. Seats are limited and shuttle times change by season, so check the timetable on the garden's website and book your ticket online before you go.

  • Time: 3 to 4 hours including the shuttle.
  • Combine with: the Ourika Valley, if you have a driver for the day.

5. Lalla Takerkoust lake

Lalla Takerkoust is a reservoir about 35 km southwest of Marrakech, 40 to 60 minutes by road. People come for lunch on a terrace above the water, quad bikes and buggies on the surrounding tracks, and views of the Atlas reflected in the lake when the water is high. It is quieter than Ourika and often paired with Agafay, which is close by. There is no useful public transport, so go with a driver, a rental car or a tour.

  • Time: half a day.
  • Good to know: the water level drops a lot in dry years, and the lake looks its best in winter and spring.

6. Oukaïmeden

Oukaïmeden is a high-altitude plateau and small ski station at around 2,600 m, 70 to 80 km from Marrakech and 1.5 to 2 hours by road. In January and February there is usually enough snow for basic skiing and sledging, with cheap equipment rental at the roadside. Facilities are simple and the lifts do not always run, so treat it as a novelty, not a ski holiday. In summer it is one of the coolest places within reach of the city, with open pasture and prehistoric rock carvings near the village.

  • Time: a full day, often combined with the Ourika Valley.
  • Tip: after heavy snow the road can close or need chains. Ask your driver the day before.

7. Ouzoud waterfalls

The Ouzoud waterfalls drop about 110 m in three tiers into a red-rock gorge, around 150 km northeast of Marrakech in the Middle Atlas foothills. They are the most visited waterfalls in Morocco. A path with many steps leads from the top to the pools at the bottom, past olive trees, cafés and troops of wild Barbary macaques. At the base, small decorated rafts take visitors close to the falling water for a couple of euros, about 20 MAD.

The drive is 2.5 to 3 hours each way, and you need two to three hours on site, so this is a full day. This Ouzoud day trip handles the transport. Shared group tours are among the cheapest day trips from Marrakech, from roughly $17 to $26 per person depending on whether a local guide and the boat are included. Lunch is normally extra.

Doing Ouzoud by public transport means a bus or shared taxi to Azilal and another taxi from there, which is slow and leaves little time at the falls. A tour or a rental car is the practical choice.

  • Time: 10 to 11 hours door to door.
  • Tip: do not feed the macaques, and keep bags zipped. They are bold around food.
  • Best season: spring, when the flow is strongest. By late summer the falls are thinner but the pools are good for cooling off.

8. Essaouira

Essaouira is a walled port town on the Atlantic, 2.5 to 3 hours west of Marrakech. It is cooler, breezier and far more relaxed than Marrakech, with 18th-century sea ramparts, a harbour full of blue boats, a compact medina that is hard to get lost in, and grilled fish for lunch. On the way, tours usually stop at an argan oil cooperative, and you may see goats standing in the argan trees by the roadside.

A day gives you four to five hours in town, which covers the ramparts, the port, the medina and lunch. Our guide to the best things to do in Essaouira has a one-day plan. If your schedule allows, stay a night: the town is at its best in the evening when the day visitors have left.

By tour: this small-group Essaouira day trip gives you free time in town with transport both ways.

By bus: Supratours and CTM run direct coaches in about 3 hours for roughly 100 to 140 MAD each way. Take an early departure, and buy your return ticket in advance, because afternoon buses back to Marrakech can sell out in high season.

  • Time: 11 to 12 hours door to door.
  • Tip: bring a jacket even in summer. The wind is strong and constant.

9. Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate

Aït Benhaddou is a fortified village of earthen towers and houses stacked up a hillside, about 180 km southeast of Marrakech. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and has appeared in a long list of films and TV series. Getting there means crossing the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, a winding road with some of the best mountain scenery in the country.

Walking into the ksar and up to the granary at the top is free. A few family houses inside charge 10 to 20 MAD to look around. Many tours continue 30 minutes to Ouarzazate for the Atlas film studios (about 80 MAD) or the Taourirt kasbah (about 20 MAD).

The honest downside is the drive: 3.5 to 4 hours each way on mountain roads, for one and a half to two hours at the site. This Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate day trip is the simplest way to do it, and group tours run from about $33 to $52 per person, usually without entrance fees or lunch.

  • Time: 12 hours or more door to door.
  • Skip it if: you are taking a desert tour to Merzouga. Almost all of them stop at Aït Benhaddou on day one.
  • Motion sickness: the pass is bend after bend. Sit near the front and take tablets if you need them.

The best half-day trips from Marrakech

If you only have a morning or an evening free, these fit:

  • Agafay at sunset: leave around 15:00 or 16:00, back after dinner.
  • Anima Garden: take the morning shuttle and be back for a late lunch.
  • Ourika Valley without the waterfall hike: a cooperative visit, a walk and lunch by the river.
  • Lalla Takerkoust: lunch by the lake, with or without quad bikes.
  • A hot-air balloon flight: this starts before dawn and has you back in the medina by mid-morning. This sunrise balloon flight includes hotel pickup and breakfast.

Tour, bus, taxi or rental car?

Way to go Works for Rough cost Good to know
Shared group tour Every trip on this list From about $15 to $50 per person Cheapest and simplest. Fixed timings, often a shopping stop
Private driver Every trip, best for families From about 300 MAD for short trips to 1,500 MAD or more for long ones, per car You set the stops and the pace. Agree the price and hours in advance
Shared grand taxi Ourika, Imlil 30 to 70 MAD per seat Leaves when full from Bab er-Rob. Cash only
Bus Essaouira 100 to 140 MAD each way Supratours or CTM. Book ahead in high season
Rental car Ouzoud, Essaouira, lake, Oukaïmeden Varies by season Easy main roads. The Tichka pass is slow and tiring for a day return

Private driver prices vary widely with the season and the vehicle, so treat the figures above as a starting point for negotiation and ask your riad for a current quote. If you prefer a fixed price booked in advance, a private transfer can be arranged online for the longer routes.

There is no train to any of these places. The railway from Marrakech only runs north towards Casablanca, Rabat and Tangier.

Places that are too far for a day trip

Some names appear on tour boards in the medina that do not work in one day:

  • Merzouga and the Sahara dunes: about nine hours each way. Allow three days.
  • Zagora: around seven hours each way. Two days minimum.
  • Fes: about 6.5 hours by train. It needs its own stay. See our things to do in Fes guide.
  • Chefchaouen: on the other side of the country. See the best places to visit in Morocco for how to route it.
  • Casablanca: possible by train in about 2.5 to 3 hours each way, but only worth it for the Hassan II Mosque.

Practical tips for day trips from Marrakech

  • Book a day or two ahead in spring and autumn. In summer and winter you can usually book the evening before.
  • Check what is included. Lunch, entrance fees, local guides and the Ouzoud boat are often extra. Carry small dirham notes.
  • Expect one shopping stop on most group tours, usually an argan cooperative. You do not have to buy anything.
  • Confirm the pickup point. Vehicles cannot enter the medina lanes, so pickups are at the nearest gate or square.
  • Dress for the destination, not the city. Mountains and coast can be 10°C cooler than Marrakech.
  • Stay connected. Mobile coverage is good on main roads and patchy in the mountains. A Morocco eSIM is the easiest way to have data for maps and messaging your driver.
  • Have insurance that covers what you plan to do. Hiking above set altitudes, quad bikes and balloon flights are common exclusions. EKTA lets you add adventure activities to a policy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Marrakech? For most first-time visitors, the Ourika Valley or Imlil, because the mountains are close and completely different from the city. If you want one big sight and do not mind a long drive, choose Ouzoud for nature, Essaouira for the coast or Aït Benhaddou for kasbahs.

Can you visit the Sahara desert on a day trip from Marrakech? No. The sand dunes at Merzouga are about nine hours away, and Zagora about seven. The Agafay desert, 45 minutes from Marrakech, is the day-trip alternative, but it is a stony plateau without dunes.

Is Essaouira worth a day trip from Marrakech? Yes, if you accept about six hours of travel for four to five hours in town. That is enough for the ramparts, the port, the medina and lunch. Staying one night is better if you can.

Can you do Aït Benhaddou as a day trip from Marrakech? Yes, but it is the longest trip on this list, with seven to eight hours of driving over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. It is worth it for the scenery and the site. If you are taking a multi-day desert tour, you will see it then.

How do you get to the Ourika Valley or Imlil without a tour? Take a shared grand taxi from the Bab er-Rob area on the south side of the medina. Seats cost about 30 to 50 MAD to the Ourika Valley and 50 to 70 MAD to Imlil, sometimes with a change at Asni. Taxis leave when all seats are sold.

Can you take day trips from Marrakech by train? Not to the places on this list. The railway only runs north. Essaouira is reached by bus, and the mountains by taxi, tour or car.

How many day trips should you take from Marrakech? One for a three-day stay, two for four or five days. Avoid doing two of the long trips on consecutive days.

Are day trips from Marrakech safe? Organised day trips are routine and safe. The main risks are road-related, so choose operators with good recent reviews, wear a seat belt, and take care on wet rocks at the waterfalls. Solo travellers will find group tours an easy way to visit the mountains.

What is the cheapest day trip from Marrakech? Anima Garden with its free shuttle, or the Ourika Valley by shared taxi. Among organised tours, shared trips to Ourika and Ouzoud are usually the cheapest.

How we researched this guide

This guide is based on research using official sources such as the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Ksar of Aït Benhaddou, the Anima Garden visitor information, and the Supratours and CTM route details, plus current tour listings, recent visitor guides and search trends. Taxi fares, guide fees and small entrance charges are not published officially.
