The best places to visit in Paris are easier to enjoy when you plan by neighbourhood. Group nearby sights together, book the big museums ahead and leave room for long lunches. Here's where we'd spend a first visit.
1. The Eiffel Tower and Trocadéro
The classic view is from the Trocadéro across the river. Book timed tickets if you want to go up, and consider an evening visit to see the tower sparkle on the hour.
2. The Louvre
The world's most-visited art museum is huge. Pick a few wings instead of trying to see everything, and reserve an entry time in advance.
3. Notre-Dame and Île de la Cité
The cathedral reopened in December 2024 after the 2019 fire. Nearby, Sainte-Chapelle's stained glass is one of the most beautiful interiors in the city.
4. Montmartre
Climb to Sacré-Cœur for a view over Paris, then wander the back streets and small squares away from the busiest corners.
5. Musée d'Orsay
A former railway station filled with Impressionist and post-Impressionist art. It's more manageable than the Louvre and a favourite for many visitors.
6. Le Marais
Medieval lanes, the elegant Place des Vosges, falafel on rue des Rosiers and plenty of small shops and galleries.
7. Versailles (day trip)
The palace and gardens are an easy train ride from central Paris. Go early, book ahead, and give the gardens as much time as the palace.
Where to stay
- Le Marais / Saint-Germain: central, walkable and full of cafés.
- Around the Eiffel Tower (7th): quieter evenings, classic views.
- Montmartre: village feel and better value, a little farther out.
Tips for a first visit
- Use the Métro: it's fast and covers the whole city.
- Many national museums are closed one day a week, so check before you plan.
- Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded tourist spots and on the Métro.
