How far is Cancún from Tulum?
The distance from Cancún to Tulum is about 130 km (80 miles) from Cancún Airport, along Federal Highway 307, the main road down the Caribbean coast. From Cancún's Hotel Zone, add the time it takes to drive back to the airport area, usually 20 to 30 minutes. The drive from Cancún to Tulum passes Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Akumal, the main stops on the stretch of coast known as the Riviera Maya.
Option 1: a private transfer
A private transfer is the simplest way to get from Cancún to Tulum. A driver meets you in the arrivals hall, loads your bags and takes you straight to your hotel, including in Tulum's Hotel Zone, which buses and trains don't reach.
- Time: about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic and where in Tulum you're going.
- Cost: about US$80 to US$150 per vehicle in 2026, depending on the size of the vehicle and the time of day. For a group of three or four, this can work out close to the cost of separate bus and taxi tickets.
- How to book: compare fixed-price transfers from Cancún Airport before you fly. Give your flight number so the driver can track delays.
Avoid the touts: Cancún Airport's arrivals area has many people offering taxis and transfers. If you've booked, look for your driver's sign and ignore everyone else. Walk straight through the area with the timeshare and tour sellers.
Best for: families, groups, anyone with lots of luggage, late-night arrivals and stays in the Hotel Zone.
Option 2: the ADO bus
ADO is Mexico's main long-distance bus company. It runs comfortable, air-conditioned coaches directly from Cancún Airport to Tulum town.
- Where from: ADO buses leave from outside Terminals 2, 3 and 4 at Cancún Airport, and from the ADO bus station in downtown Cancún.
- Where to: the ADO station in downtown Tulum, on the main avenue.
- Time: about 2 to 3 hours, depending on the route and how many stops it makes. Some buses stop in Playa del Carmen.
- Cost: about 400 to 475 pesos per person from the airport in 2026.
- How to book: buy tickets at the ADO counters in the airport, or online at ado.com.mx. Buses on popular times can sell out in high season.
From the ADO station in Tulum, you'll need a taxi to reach the Hotel Zone, Aldea Zamá or La Veleta.
Best for: budget travellers and anyone staying in Tulum town.
Option 3: the Tren Maya
The Tren Maya is the new railway around the Yucatán Peninsula, and its stretch from Cancún to Tulum gives you a new way to make the journey.

- Getting to the station: the train leaves from Cancún Aeropuerto station, which is not inside the airport terminals. A shuttle bus links the terminals to the station; it costs about 35 pesos and takes about 15 minutes.
- The journey: about 1 hour 40 to 45 minutes to Tulum, stopping at Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen.
- Arriving in Tulum: Tulum station is about 5 km from the town centre, so you'll need a taxi or other transport from there. There's also a Tulum Aeropuerto station further south, by Tulum's international airport.
- Cost: about 450 pesos in tourist class and 720 pesos in Premier class in 2026, according to recent reports. Check the official booking site for current fares.
- How to book: online at the official site, reservas.ventaboletostrenmaya.com.mx, or at the station.
The catch: there are only a few departures a day, and with the shuttle and the taxi at the other end, the total journey time can be similar to the bus or a transfer. Check the timetable against your flight time before you plan around it.
Best for: travellers who like trains, arrive at a time that fits the timetable and are travelling light.
Option 4: driving from Cancún to Tulum
Renting a car is the best option if you want to explore the cenotes, Cobá, Akumal and the coast at your own pace. Most big rental companies have desks at Cancún Airport, and the drive is straightforward.

- The route: follow Federal Highway 307 south from Cancún Airport. It's a wide, mostly dual-carriageway road that runs directly to Tulum, past Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Akumal.
- Time: about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours without stops.
- Driving tips: watch for speed bumps (topes), which are common through towns and not always well marked; keep to the speed limits; and avoid driving at night if you can. At fuel stations, check the pump is set to zero before filling, and count your change.
- Insurance: Mexican law requires liability insurance, and the cheap prices on booking sites often don't include it. Check exactly what's included before you book, so you aren't surprised at the desk.
- Parking in Tulum: parking in the Hotel Zone can be limited and is often paid. Ask your hotel.
Best for: independent travellers who want to see the cenotes, ruins and beaches outside Tulum.
Option 5: colectivos via Playa del Carmen
Colectivos are shared minivans that run along Highway 307 between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, stopping wherever passengers want to get on or off. They're the cheapest way to travel along the coast, but there's no direct colectivo from Cancún Airport to Tulum. You'd need a bus to Playa del Carmen first, then a colectivo south.
It's a good option for short hops along the coast once you're there, such as from Tulum to Akumal, but with luggage, it's not the easiest way to arrive.
Best for: backpackers travelling light, and day trips along the coast.
Option 6: fly into Tulum instead
Tulum has its own airport, Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO), which opened in December 2023 south of the town. If you can find a flight there, it saves you the journey from Cancún entirely. There are fewer routes than to Cancún, so compare both before you book. A transfer or taxi then takes you to your hotel.
What about a taxi from Cancún Airport?
You can take a taxi from Cancún Airport to Tulum, but airport taxis are usually expensive, and you'll often pay more than for a pre-booked transfer. If you do take one, agree on the price before you get in. Ride-hailing apps have had restrictions at Cancún Airport, so don't count on them for pickups there.
Stops along the way
If you have a car or a private transfer, it's easy to break the journey:
- Puerto Morelos: a small, relaxed fishing town with a reef just offshore.
- Playa del Carmen: the biggest town on the Riviera Maya, with Quinta Avenida, its long pedestrian street of shops and restaurants.
- Akumal: a bay where you can snorkel with green sea turtles, about 25 km before Tulum.
- Cenotes: there are cenotes just off the highway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, including Dos Ojos.
Our guide to the best things to do in Tulum has more on each.
Practical tips
- Get pesos: buses, colectivos, the Tren Maya shuttle and many cenotes are easier with cash. Use bank ATMs rather than the exchange counters in the arrivals hall.
- Pay the Visitax: Quintana Roo charges foreign visitors a tourist tax of about 283 to 285 pesos. Pay it only on the official site, visitax.gob.mx.
- Stay connected from landing: a Mexico eSIM means you can contact your driver, check the bus times and use maps straight away.
- Allow plenty of time for return flights: leave Tulum at least four hours before an international flight from Cancún, in case of traffic or delays.
- Get travel insurance: cover that includes medical treatment and delays is worth having for any trip to Mexico.
